(Summary) The Heritage in Focus, curated by Goethe-Institut Athen and Humboldt Forum, explores the evolving definition of cultural heritage, blending the tangible with the intangible. The identity design, using Awake Mono—a monospace font by Pavlos Lavithis—symbolises heritage preservation through its consistent spacing, while its structured rigidity hints at the impermanence and fluidity of cultural identity over time.
(Concept Development) Each event in the series addresses the shifting nature of cultural spaces, focusing on the impact of gentrification and commercialization on spaces like Berlin’s club scene and Athens’ cinemas. The visual identity employs a layering technique in the posters, with each event building upon the previous one. The first event features a straightforward design. The second introduces the first layer of distortion, physically overlaying the original design, reflecting how culture is shaped by external forces. By the third event, the poster will carry three layers, each representing the cumulative effect of time, gentrification, and commercialization on cultural heritage. And it goes on.
(Key Motif) In the digital medium, a moving "mould" is introduced. A visual distortion that blurs everything it touches, embodying the malleability of heritage. It shows how heritage is continually reshaped by time, cultural shifts, and external forces. Through the juxtaposition of static and dynamic elements, the project invites viewers to reconsider heritage's permanence and recognize it as something always in flux, subject to distortion and reinterpretation.
